The Bible as a Repository of Identities
in Early Medieval Historiography

Almost every historiographical text written in the early Middle Ages is influenced by the Bible in a number of different ways; historians have investigated certain aspects of the use of the Bible in various studies and at the example of different authors. However, no attempt was made to collect and catalogue the different forms of usage so far. I will present an approach that first tries to provide an overview of the different categories the Bible was used for and that in a second step answers the question how the Bible shaped the conceptions of history, the visions of community and consequently the own identity.
