Regional and ethnic identities in Roman and post-imperial Europe

The aim of this subproject was to do preliminary work on a study about regional identities in the Eastern Alps and how they perished, transformed and developed in the years ca. 500 to 900. During this time the region underwent two major shifts: the transformation from a Roman Province to a Slavic realm, which became after just 150 years part of the Frankish Empire. These shifts meant major changes in the ethnic identity and external as well as internal perception of the eastern alpine populations. A problem in this area is the scarceness of sources which makes the cooperation with archaeology necessary. The project "The Eastern Alps revisited - Continuity and Change from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages" is a joint project of history and archaeology and financed by the Austrian Science Fund, in close collaboration with the other SCIRE projects.
